Data Feed Options
Penguin Random House LLC provides a variety of data feeds for the customers we work with to create and sell our books.

For Print metadata, we provide the following feed types:

  • ONIX 3.0 (sent in .xml)
  • ONIX 3.1 (sent in .xml)
  • MetaExcel (sent in .xlsx)
  • Direct Market (sent in .csv; graphic novel & comic book-specific)
  • Cover Images (sent in .jpg; or as downloadable URL links embedded in metadata files)
  • Stock Feeds (sent in .txt)
  • Promotional Materials (see below)

Penguin Random House no longer supports a "pick-up" location for our files. We now require all metadata feed recipients to provide us with a file transfer solution where we can deliver files to your chosen location. This improves our visibility into which ISBNs have/have not failed in our outgoing feeds, plus allows us visibility into what customers are/are not receiving from us in case we need to troubleshoot.

We accept connections to the following solutions:

  • SFTP
  • FTPS
  • S3 Bucket

An FTP connection over Port 21 is not recommended for security purposes.

All connections are required to be configured for a username/password authentication method, as we do not currently support SSH keys. PRH's IP addresses for system approval can be provided upon request.

We require the following information to connect to these solutions:

S/FTPS
Host: (domain name is preferred over IP)
Port: (Port 22 is preferred)
Username:
Password:
File Path: (can provide multiple)

S3 Bucket
Host: (example: "us-east-1")
Bucket Name:
Username:
Password:
File Path: (can provide multiple)

We provide the following feeds:
Below you will find additional details about each feed, along with attached sample files and implementation guides. Please note that this covers all options for Physical/Print Book feeds—not eBook feeds. We provide a separate eBook feed to those customers who require them. If you are interested in selling our eBook content, please send an email to DigitalBusinessDevelopment@penguinrandomhouse.com.

ONIX 3.0:

Sample File | Implementation Guide

ONIX 3.0 feeds are sent in the form of an .xml file. They can be sent either zipped or unzipped, and can be sent out on the following cadences: daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly. Additionally, you have the option of making them either a Full feed which contains all applicable titles, or a Delta feed which contains only titles whose metadata has changed since the last time it was sent.

We provide the option of a one-time Initial Full feed so that newly onboarding customers can receive all applicable titles to start.

ONIX 3.1:

Sample File | Implementation Guide

ONIX 3.1 feeds are sent in the form of an .xml file.

MetaExcel:

Sample File | Implementation Guide

MetaExcel feeds are sent in the form of an Excel (.xlsx) spreadsheet. The title data provided in these feeds are not as robust as our ONIX feeds, but they are a great option for those who cannot accept ONIX 3.0 and/or would prefer a more human-readable format.

MetaExcel can be sent on the same cadences as our ONIX feeds: daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly. They can be set up as either a Full feed which contains all applicable titles, or a Delta feed which contains only titles whose metadata has changed since the last time it was sent.

We provide the option of a one-time Initial Full feed so that newly onboarding customers can receive all applicable titles to start.

Direct Market:

Comet Standard PRH MetaCSV
Sample File | Implementation Guide Sample File | Implementation Guide

PRH provides two types of Direct Market files, but we encourage the use of the Comet Standard as it is the new official metadata standard across the entire Direct Market. Direct Market feeds are specifically tailored to graphic novel & comic book retailers. These feeds are sent in .csv format and they will only include title formats that fall under the Direct Market. Please see below for the feed types we offer:

  1. Monthly Catalog Files
    1. These files will typically capture Monthly Catalogs that span 2 months back & 1 month forward.
    2. We can either send them in files separated by catalog month, or we can combine all catalog months into a single file.
    3. Cadence options: Daily and weekly. They can be set up as either a Full feed which contains all applicable titles, or a Delta feed which contains only titles whose metadata has changed since the last time it was sent.
  2. FOC Weekly Files
    1. These files typically represent FOC two weeks in the future from today's date, as well as 2 weeks in the past.
    2. We can either send them in files separated by FOC week, or we can combine all FOC weeks into a single file.
    3. Cadence options: Weekly Full only.
  3. Backlist Files
    1. These files contain all currently active and available titles. There are 3 backlist catalogs to choose from depending on your business needs: US Market Backlist, Canadian Market Backlist, and/or International Market Backlist. (Please note that a single title may appear in all 3 backlist files if that title has, for example, world rights.)
    2. Cadence options: Daily and weekly. They can be set up as either a Full feed which contains all applicable titles, or a Delta feed which contains only titles whose metadata has changed since the last time it was sent.

Cover Images:
All cover images are sent as .jpg files named by a 13-digit ISBN. We provide two options for how to receive cover images:

  1. Through a downloadable URL link to each title's cover image, which can be included within all feed types mentioned above.
  2. Through a separate cover images feed, which provides the individual .jpg files. They can be sent either zipped or unzipped. If sent unzipped, then individual images will be sent directly to your provided location as loose files; if sent zipped, then you will receive a contained .zip folder of all those images to your provided location.

Stock Feeds:
Our stock feeds are sent in a .txt file on a daily basis. In these stock feeds, we do not supply exact inventory quantities by title but do supply a binary 1/0 (yes/no) indicator to show whether we have stock on hand for each ISBN. Please note that this feed solely provides inventory information, not the actual metadata for each title.

If you would like to receive our stock feed, then you will have to provide us with an SFTP location. Our stock feeds switched to SFTP for enhanced security measures and cannot be sent over any other connection type.

Promotional Materials:
Preview files and additional sales assets are available to our customers. Please see our questionnaires below for more information. Further details can be provided upon request from the Physical Customer Operations team.
